The group, formed in 2015, was born out of Devan and Khalid, the duo that has experienced much success since they first met in Kingston in 2012. Wild Rivers is an indie folk band based in Toronto, Ontario. I'm reflecting on the harm I could have caused you Now I am sitting like a gambler in his debtĬounting all the ways that I would hurt you I presented myself as something I'm not to you You've caused me a lot of emotional turmoil Now I must say you've had my mind in quite the wreck We're in a dire situation and need help urgently Oh, don't you twist your tongue just to protect meÄon't sugarcoat things to try and spare my feelings I've been struggling and causing destruction in my personal life Oh, I've been setting fire to my bed sheets I need to release myself from the weight of your lingering words Let go of your words that I've been hanging on I'm here to pay my respects and maintain my beliefs Now I just came to give my regards and keep my faith I was hoping for a different type of reunion, but circumstances have led to this one I acknowledge that I should have been here sooner, but I'm here now Start by saying I'm a couple years too late The lyrics are unique in the sense that they don't explicitly blame one person or assign fault, but instead, they illustrate how both parties have played a role in the downfall. Overall, the song explores the complex and messy nature of relationships that may not always have a happy ending. Despite this, the chorus repeats the phrase "Mayday, we're going down" which can be seen as a metaphor for how the relationship is sinking and in need of rescue. The line "don't you twist your tongue just to protect me" may suggest that one of them has been lying to spare the other's feelings. The following verse alludes to the idea that the relationship has been tumultuous and that both parties have hurt each other. The narrator admits that they are a "couple years too late" to fix things, but they still show up to the reunion to "give their regards and keep their faith." However, they acknowledge that it's time to "let go of the words" that they've been holding onto, perhaps indicating that they've been holding onto hope or false expectations. The song "Mayday" by Wild Rivers tells a story of a broken relationship that is on the brink of falling apart.
